Wkrótce zostaną tylko wspomnienia.
Karuizawa is one of my favorite distilleries and the blog has already hosted it (e.g. Karuizawa 1981 Cask 2042, Karuizawa 1976 Cask 7818). Today I have the pleasure to spend time with Memories of Karuizawa. We have here 1999 vintage, 13 years old, cask 879 and 62,9% ABV. It’s hard to imagine anything more beautiful then natural color, unchillfiltered, cask strength and single cask. I bought this bottle in December 2012 and in principle I have tasted it only once or twice. Today I have a good opportunity to do it again.
C: very dark, coca-cola, eggplant – perhaps the darkest whisky I have drunk (I refer only to the natural color),
N: och… beautiful, very intense sherry, liqueur, herbs, lots of sweet, caramel, hot cherry pie with whipped cream, figs, raisins, leather armchairs, there is also quite a lot of smoke, after adding water everything enhances, more mint, lemon and some freshly cut grass appears,
T: explosion of flavors, oily, very lively, a lot of fruits – berries, cherries and plums, dried apricot, there is also a bit of lemon and mint, and besides that there is dark chocolate, cocoa, slightly spicy with a mild bitterness, after adding water we have ginger and more bitterness,
F: long, fruity with traces of dark chocolate.
Once again, I must admit that I really regret that Karuizawa no longer creates whisky. Indeed, it will soon be the only memories. Memories of Karuizawa, vintage 1999, cask 879 is an excellent single malt. Alcohol is perfectly harmonized and despite the 62.9% ABV you can taste this single malt even without dilution. Love it!
