My favourite Johnnie Walker.
Johnnie Walker brand needs no introduction. The basic version, Red Label can be found everywhere, in large quantities. It all has started in 1820 in Kilmarnock, when 15 year old John Walker founded the store where he offered, among others, alcohols. Mixing whisky in larger amounts occurred during the reign of Alexander Walker. It was after 1860. In 1893 the company purchased its first single malt distillery Cardu. Later they also acquired shares in many other distillieries. Currently Johnnie Walker belongs to Diageo.
Johnnie Walker is famous for its blends. My today’s version the Green Label is a blended malt (pure malt, vatted malt), a mixture of only single malts, without any grain whisky. The key ingredients are: Talisker from the Isle of Skye, Linkwood and Cragganmore from Speyside, and Caol Ila from Islay. The youngest component is 15 years old. Recently a lot was said about the complete withdrawal of the production of Green Label, there have been many rumors and basically its fate was not known. Indeed, this version has disappeared from the shelves of European shops, but still is offered in Asia. In Poland, you can still meet it in bars. Johnnie Walker Green Label is bottled at 43% ABV.
N: begins with juicy tropical fruits, also orange, then fairly smoothly passes in a light sweetness, caramel, toffee, after that smoke, peat and a little bit of ash comes out, over the time notes of spices and slightly herbal releases,
T: quite oily and gradually spreads in the mouth, first sweet, vanilla, honey, then ripe fruits, grapefruit, orange, a number of varying tones of oak with bitterness, slightly peppery with a hint of peat,
F: long with traces of oak, light peat and bitterness, and a drop of orange juice.
Green Label is my favourite whisky from the whole Johnnie Walker family. The smell is medium intense, but complex and nicely balanced, similar situation is with taste. Despite the 43% ABV it is sufficiently expressive. It is unfortunate that on the shelves of our stores this whisky is no longer available.
