Happy New Year!.
On Christmas wife presented me with a beautiful bottle of Highland Park Loki. This is one of the of Valhalla Collection released by Highland Park. Beside Loki, on the market Thor and Freya have already appeared. At the beginning of the New Year Odin will also join them. I will not go deeper into the Norse mythology, from which all mentioned come from. These characters have appeared also on the big screen, eg. in the movies Thor and Avangers. Among them Loki is my favourite character. After him we even named our dog. Therefore, during my last year’s visit to Orkney in Scotland to Highland Park Distillery I was going to purchase Loki. Unfortunately, all the stocks were already sold out and in Europe remained predominantly auctions or few shops, where prices have been significantly different from those whisky could be bought initially. In this situation I let it go. Imagine my, of course pleasant, surprise when under the Christmas tree I found Highland Park Loki. Even the dog was very happy with the arrival of its liquid namesake. My wife got that bottle in the US in San Antonio. It was not very easy, she had several calls, local shop had arranged delivery from another city, she had to go several km outside of San Antonio etc. No, no … my wife didn’t flew to the United States specially to buy me a whisky … I am not so spoiled. ☺
Okay. Let’s move to the single malt. We have here 15 years old and 48,7% ABV. Packed in an interesting bottle, which gives the impression of the severity of the structure, you can see it in the pictures. To all of this wooden box in the shape of a Viking ship.
N: a real explosion of fruits: apricots, dried apricots, peach, dried fruits, fruit compote, cherries, sweet cherries, fresh, for a short while traces of broth, then a touch of smoke and peat, vanilla enhances, the sweetness of caramel, biscuits, deeper I have something intriguing, mineral, hard for me to determine, perhaps will discover it later, leather, a pinch of white pepper, ginger but with a distance, a little bit of orange and tangerine, green apple, coniferous trees, very, very pleasant, at times and after a certain period it reminds me white wine, riesling, ripe white grapes, constantly evolving and changing, now I have a lemon and lime, but in a while I feel the traces of wood;
T: intensively, fruity, with nice sparks on your tongue, white grapes, a drop of orange juice, apple, grapefruit, biscuits, a touch of peat, ginger, light bitterness, and even mint and lemongrass, gentle traces of wood, over time more and more pleasantly warming;
F: long with apple, biscuits, ginger and mild bitterness.
Highland Park Loki is a beautiful whisky in traditional style. You feel that you are dealing with very well constructed single malt. The nose is lovely as well as the taste, although quite unusual. Single malt is constantly changing and evolving. Now I know three Lokis: movies character, my dog and whisky. I really like everyone, but each one is different. Exactly like Loki from Norse mythology – one form of “many faces”.
