Independent Caol Ila.
Yesterday I was at Whisky Live Sopot 2017. This is the first edition of this event in Sopot. It was smaller (in terms of the number of exhibitors and visitors) than eg Whisky Live Warsaw 2016 or 2015, but for sure more intimate, which really suited me. I don’t like crowds. You could talk freely to each other and easily get anywhere. Waiting and counting on next editions.
One of the more interesting stands was Adelphi. There Caol Ila 13 years old felt into my hands. Distilled in 2003, bottled in 2016. 280 bottles, unchillfiltered, cask strength 58.9%, natural colour. Cask 301264. You can not want more in terms of presentation. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to buy the whole bottle and am curious if it will taste like at the festival.
N: from the beginning you can recognize a peated whisky, smoke, ash, bandages, iodine, hospital in general, salty sea air, fishing nets, smoked fish, evidently Islay, only after a while fruits begin to appear, smoked plum, dried apricot, lemons, then traces of honey, with time it gets quite creamy, occasionally I have also mint;
T: I feel the power …, you have to get used to it (or immediately add some water if you do not want to wait), of course peat, ash, smoked seafood, as well as ginger, grapefruit and a drop of lemon, then lemon cake, between all of these a little of bitterness emerges, later I have some dried peach and apricot;
F: long, peated with grapefruit and bitterness.
Caol Ila 13 years old Adelphi Selection didn’t disappoint me. Although I was afraid that the magic of the festival took me away and it would taste less at home, quietly savored. In this case, you can enjoy cask strength and a large field to add water, which highlights all the elements and enhances the impression of lemon, adds freshness. Besides, the taste nicely coincides with the nose.
