Edition for Travel Retail.
After describing visit to Bowmore distillery on Islay, Bowmore Legend tasting impressions and of course trying Bowmore 1968 31 years old at the Whisky Live Paris 2013, we should go deeper into the subject and refer to the next versions of the whisky. Thus, may I present Bowmore 12 years old Enigma, edition offered mainly in Travel Retail, but also from time to time available in other places. The advantage of many versions of whisky in Travel Retail is a 1 liter bottle and once attractive price. Today, the principle of much lower prices at the airports remains a memory.
Bowmore 12 years old Enigma is colored, chillfiltered and bottled with minimum 40% ABV. Apparently, to create Enigma more sherry casks were used.
N: the smell is quite sharp, peat and smoke, ash, fireplace, but it is all kept at a moderate level, rather there is no hospital, after the first phase the fruits are comming: pineapple, peach, maybe also mango, it gets sweeter, vanilla, honey, and then the sea air returns with salt and a bit of seaweed, at the end I get grilled oysters, over the time there are also sour, citrus notes, in the room you can also smell traces of tar,
T: a touch of lemon, and at the moment sweetness, honey, gradually increasing spicyness, warming ginger, grapefruit, ripe orange, orange peel, clear traces of bitterness and peat,
F: long, dry with peat, a touch of grapefruit, and lemon drop too.
Bowmore 12 years old Enigma is a representative of a moderate style of Islay. Of course it offers smoke, peat and fireplace, but these accents do not overwhelm. Bowmore is well balanced. It is worth spending a little time during the tasting, you can find then a lot of interesting additional tones and phases, such as the changing oranges, lemons. Originally I rated it a bit lower, but longer tasting came out here for the benefit. I wouldn’t also complain if it was bottled with higher ABV and no chillfiltration, but maybe next time. I finished tasting with anchovies in olive oil and it was very pleasant.
