Arran Distillery is located in Lochranza, in the North of Islay of Arran, Scotland.
Last weekend we went to our friends in Tuchola Forest. As it happens in our country, the weather to the very end is always a mystery, which makes it difficult to choose the right drink. Once I have decided that this will be but a single malt, I had to consider what kind of the whisky it is supposed to be. Time to go was getting shorter, as I could entrust the weather forecast, which promised a beautiful weekend. After verification the shelves in the local Alma Market, I took into consideration Arran 10 years old and Bowmore 12 years old. I chose Arran, recognizing that the unpeated whisky will fit more for sipping on a warm evening.
Arran Distillery is in Lochranza in the north of Islay of Arran in Scotland. The island is located on the west coast, on the line between Campbeltown and Glasgow. In a similar latitude as Islay of Islay (with some deviation to the south). Some say that the Islay of Arran is Scotland in a miniature, there are mountains, forests, valleys, lakes and rivers, of course, also the sea – all in one. On the other hand, you can probably say the same about many other Scottish islands, which are just beautiful.
The distillery was founded in 1995, so this year reaches adulthood – Happy Birtday.
Arran is the only distillery on island. Mainly they don’t use peated barley but I have also seen peated one, presented while Tokio International Bar Show & Whisky Live Tokyo 2013. Their whiskies are natural colour and un-chillfiltered.
We had Arran 10 years old, 46% ABV, natural colour and un-chillfiltered.
C: old gold,
N: vanilla interspersed with almonds and raisins, then fruity – pears, apples,
T: sweet, honey – well mouth filling, a little apples, then slightly sharp,
F: medium long, a little sweet with fruits, could be longer.
Flavor composition indicates that the whisky matured in bourbon barrels and sherry casks.
To conclude, I must say that I made the right choice, Arran has been well received by the company. Good whisky suitable for light sipping and disputing about “life”.
