Blended Malt od Douglas Laing […]

Its time to enter the New Year. For this occasion, I bought something that caught my attention above all with the look. Yes, I know it does not have the slightest impact on the tasting values, but you do not always have to take everything so seriously. This seriousness is more than enough for every day. Therefore, it started from the package - you can assess it by pictures below. Interesting, with a movable ring in the middle, allows you to play with characters. What else? We have here Douglas Laings Remarkable Regional Malts with a Twist 10 years old, bottled with 48% ABV, natural colour and no chill filtration. Edition limited to 5000 bottles (my is No. 2541), for the 70 years of Douglas Laing. This independent bottler decided to mix their 10-year-old blended malts - Epicurean from Lowlands, Timorous Beastie from the Highlands, Scallywag from Speyside, The Gauldrons from Campbeltowon, Rock Oyster from Islands and Big Peat from Islay. And thats how the final product was made. What is inside the bottle? C: light gold; N: from the beginning white wine, lets say that riesling, but its only the first, short moment, then I have peat elements, smoke and asphalt, at the same time a lot of ripe and even over-ripe fruits, I think here about apples, pears and even oranges, a lemon drop, then a bit of honey and vanilla emerges, later something mineral-metallic, generally quite interesting, versatile; T: from the very beginning very sweet, but also directly with the elements of peat, sparking on the tongue and warming, I can feel the power and have to get used to it, when we get it over the flavours will stand out and you will find that they harmonize well with the smell; the sweetness of honey and vanilla, fruits, apples, pears, oranges, in this case they are almost ripe, during all of that you can feel peat distillate, a touch of salt, with time I get a ginger and cloves; F: rather long, with the remains of ginger, cloves and shy orange. Score: 85....

    Young Sherrymonster

Recently, I had the opportunity to take a walk through the airport shops, mainly in the whisky departments. In fact, nothing particularly interested me. Yes, I met terribly expensive bottles Dalmore, Macallan or 50-year-old Glenfiddich, except that I treat them rather as a permanent exhibition. From products for people, my eyes attracted Aberlour ABunadh, batch 58, 61.1% ABV and I decided to take it on a further journey. Yes, its a NAS, except that in a natural presentation - colour, no...

    Peat and red wine.

During last Whisky Live Warsaw 2017, a friend of mine presented me a solid sample of Longrow Red 13 years old Malbec Cask Matured - great thanks. Longrow is a peated whisky produced by the Springbank Distillery, next to the Springbark (medium peated) and much milder Hazelburn. We are talking about the Campbeltown Region, which is the smallest whisky region in Scotland. In addition to these, there are also Glen Scotia Distillery and Glengyle Distillery producing Kilkerran. My guest for today...

    Young and ready

It has been a while since last Kilchoman on the blog, then it was a version prepared for Whisky Live Tokyo 2013. Today I also have a festival version, the Whisky & Friends M&P Festival. This time it is also a single cask, no 254/2011, my bottle is 45 out of 258, distilled on 27th May 2011 and bottled on 11th April 2016, natural color, unchillfiltered, cask strength 58% ABV, finish in Pedro Ximenez casks. There is nothing to hide I like single casks the most. Lets get straight to the...

    Utah Whiskey

With age, the time is running faster or all that is good soon ends, you could endlessly cite this type of wisdom. I just got back from vacation, hence the mood. That is why it may be worth a moment to reminisce. I was in the US, most the time in Utah - beautiful national parks and this kind of stuff. Really very nice, peaceful area, worth exploring and returning. I would not be myself if I didn’t look at the liquor stores from time to time. And there is a surprise ... the lack of whisky ......

    Whisky Festival 2015 Exclusive

I have tried single malts matured in many different barrels, after Bourbon of course, sherry, port, madeira, other wines and beer too. I did not drink whisky aged in sparkling wine casks. So its time for a new sensations or maybe it will not make much difference? Interesting ... During a visit to a distillery on the Isle of Jura, Jura Tastival hit my eyes, specially released for the festival in 2015, distilled in 1997 and bottled with 52% ABV. Above that natural color and non-chill filtered....

    Independent Caol Ila

Yesterday I was at Whisky Live Sopot 2017. This is the first edition of this event in Sopot. It was smaller (in terms of the number of exhibitors and visitors) than eg Whisky Live Warsaw 2016 or 2015, but for sure more intimate, which really suited me. I dont like crowds. You could talk freely to each other and easily get anywhere. Waiting and counting on next editions. One of the more interesting stands was Adelphi. There Caol Ila 13 years old felt into my hands. Distilled in 2003, bottled...

    Independent Macallan

Macallan previously appeared on the blog in the official version of Fine Oak, after 18 years of maturing. Today I decided to reach for Macallan 21 years old from the independent bottler Douglas Laing, Old & Rare series, Platinum Selection. We have here a single cask - refill hogshead, 245 bottles (mines no 6), cask strength 52% ABV, natural colour. Distillation took place in March 1989, bottling in September 2010. The presentation is just perfect. [caption id=attachment_7160...

    Independent Tomatin

On the blog Tomatin has not yet arrived, I have to change it. So I invite you to tasting impressions the Tomatin 1996/2013, 46% ABV, Connoisseurs Choice, Gordon & MacPhail. As with other releases of this series we have natural color and unchillfiltered. C: white wine, N: first of all light and sweet, vanilla, butter cookies, coconut cookies, white chocolate, caramel, not too intense and quite unilateral, after some time I still have floral notes, maybe an apricot, then banana and...

    Independent Dalmore

Four years ago on the blog I posted an entry about Dalmore 12 years old (how this time flies), I invite you to that entry as a prelude to todays colleague, which is Dalmore from an independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice series, vintage 1999, bottled in 2013 with 46% ABV. Typically for the release we have natural color and unchillfiltered. On this occasion, I have to mention Brand Ambassador Richard Paterson, who seems to be celebrating 50th anniversary in the whisky...
