200 anniversary […]

Recently, we have many round anniversaries on Islay, there was Laphroaig, Ardbeg and now 200 anniversary of Lagavulin. The distillery does not offer many official editions. We can choose from delicious 16 years old, more rare 12 years old and annual special editions. All gain consumer recognition. On the occasion of the 200th birtday, Lagavulin decided to present 8 years old whisky. At first glance, it sounds modest, for such a large and round anniversary. Of course, the distillery has added the story of Alfred Barnard, who in 1886 on the site tried Lagavulin 8 years old and described it as exceptionally fine. On the other hand, melting stocks of whisky are obvious, and the younger products must be sold for increasingly higher prices. In this case, when it comes to presentation, probably only 48% ABV saves us, color of white wine can also be natural, but the distillery does not boast about that. I will not complain that they indicated the age - 8 years, which deserves to be approved while we are under the omnipresent flood of NAS (no age statement). N: still in the bottle, quite soft, slightly peaty, at times even fresh, in a glass similar, quite fresh, relatively young and rather not intense, peat somewhere has evaporated, only a distant haze has remained, from time to time I have traces of smoked fish, grilled oysters and other seafood, maybe fishing nets, perhaps the sea salt air, after a while, I also sense a bit of lemon and lime, then ash, it seems that you have to give it time to breathe, just now the smell intensifies, a drop of water...

    Double Matured

When I roamed the Munich airport last time, in my arms, without the slightest hesitation, Lagavulin Distillers Edition fell in. Single malt distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2014, batch No. lgv. 4/503, 43% ABV. The tradition of Distillers Edition is Double Maturation. The second one takes place in a wine barrels, in the case of lgv. 4/503 this is Pedro Ximenez. Will my expectations be satisfied? Lets see. peat from Islay

In a comment to a previous post I promised to write about something peaty but also matured in sherry casks. The choice fell on Lagavulin 16 years old. At least as I remember, it is kind of that whisky. It isnt the best representative of that kind and obviously isnt fully matured or finished in sherry casks. Sherry influence may not be that big. But it is worth to try it. For sure I am not mistaken to the peat, well see how it is with sherry ... At preliminary point I must add that...

Laphroaig is located by a beautiful bay in the southern part of the island, just by the town of Port Ellen.

Nearby there are Ardbeg and Lagavulin, as like charmingly situated and influenced by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea.
