from Douglas Laing […]

When describing Bruichladdich Port Charlotte An Turas Mor I was glad that each producing distillery from Islay is represented on the blog. But the joy was premature, because I forgot about Caol Ila. I do not know how it happened, I probably thought I had written about it. Caol Ila was established in 1846. It is located in the NE part of Islay near Port Askaig, where the ferry from Tarbert arrives. It is worth mentioning that the ferry Finlaggan, which I sailed there was built in 2011 in the Gdansk Repair Shipyard. I wrote about the trip to Islay in this link. Caol Ila is beautifully situated on the waterfront. From the still hall there is the view right on the Sound of Islay. The distillery belongs to of Diageo. I like releases from independent bottlers. They usually have a natural color, not less than 46% ABV and are not chill filtered. Thats the way my Caol Ila is presented. In addition, I know that it was distilled in Winter 2000, and bottled in Summer of 2010. Thus, we have 9 years. Single malt comes from one barrel - refill hogshead DMG REF: 6420. Single malt from independent bottler

Ian Macleod is an independant bottler. Simplifying the business is to purchase barrels of distillate from specific distillery, and then selecting the appropriate time due to the aging process, pouring into the bottles, and offering the consumer. Presentation of single malts by independent bottlers is commendable, because usually there is a natural color, un-chillfiltered and alcohol of 46% ABV.
