On Sakurajima volcano […]

After a relation from the visit to the Chichibu Distillery, lets stay for a moment in Japan. This time we will go to the south to the island of Kyushu, to the active volcano Sakurajima approx. 1117 m above sea level, located in the neighborhood of Kagoshima city. [caption id=attachment_4216 align=alignnone width=801] Hakushu NAS, Sakurajima, Kyushu[/caption] It was there that I made my tasting of the latest product from Hakushu, NAS (no age statement) version, bottled with 43% ABV. Ive tried it in the Yamazaki Distillery, owned by to the same company - Suntory. There are also Hakushu 12 years old and Hakushu Single Cask on the blog. [caption id=attachment_4217 align=alignnone width=801] Hakushu NAS, Sakurajima, Kyushu[/caption] N: typical Japanese, sweet, biscuity, raisiny with green apples and pears, slightly herbal, with vanilla, deeper and with a time I have a little of smoke and it is not the smoke from the volcano ;) T: sparks on the tongue, but it does not irritate with the taste of alcohol, thats good; sweet, biscuity, after a while almost ripe citruses arrive, orange and mandarin, a touch of figs, occasional delicate traces of peat; F: rather short with traces of orange and vanilla. Score: 81. In Japan, it is mainly drink with lots of ice, but of course, it is well suited to be enjoyed in its pure form. The next day, I felt it a little ashy, but this time it was clearly from Sakurajima. Testing / Tasting Travel

    After visting, tasting.

Previously I presented a photo report of Yamazaki Distillery visit. As it happens in decent distilleries, on site you can make tasting. Usually only basic single malt releases are available. In Yamazaki it was a lot more interesting. While the distillery tour, of course, we were offered Yamazaki NAS and Hakushu NAS - given in popular in Japan way, ie. with plenty of ice or for tough guys without dilution. Hesitantly, but I decided to let go my purism and check the ice version. Very tasty,...

    Herbal single malt

Today I decided to go back to Japan and reach for The Hakushu 12 years old (about The Hakushu Single Cask I wrote here). The bottle I bought in Tokyo, in Liquors Hasegawa. The coolest whisky store Ive been to. In addition, of course, to a large selection of spirits, there was the opportunity to taste most of them for a small fee. I remember that I tried there Ardbeg Uigeadail and Ichiros Malt matured in Japanese red wine casks. The Hakushu 12 years old is chill filtered and probably...

The good start of New Year

The Yamazaki is the flagship single malt from Suntory and the oldest distillery in Japan. I wrote about the beginnings of whisky in this country, inculuding Suntory and Yamazaki, in the post about Japan and whisky (it is in Polish only). It is worth to mention that Hakushu is the second Suntorys single malt distillery. I also wrote about one of its Single Cask version on the blog. Here you can also read about my visit to the distillery. [caption id=attachment_2627 align=alignnone...

Hakushu Distillery belongs to the Japanese giant in drinks industry – Suntory.

[caption id=attachment_1278 align=alignnone width=801] Hakushu Single Cask Whisky[/caption] Suntory was founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii and was named as today in 1963. In 1923 roku, in the area of Osaka and Kyoto its first single malt distillery - Yamazaki Distillery was established. Due to the growing demand for whisky in 1973 Hakushu Distillery was built. Our todays guest comes right from that place. Outside of Japan, Suntory owns such whisky brands as Bowmore, Auchentoshan, Glen...

Tastings was included in the ticket price, besides very rare editions, which could be obtained for the so-called Premium Vouhers, I mentioned which in the part 3 TIBS.
