Adult from the north of Islay […]

After a visit to the Bunnahabhain Distillery its time to try an adult single malt from them. On the blog we already have some representatives of Bunnahabhain: 12 years old, Darach Ur, Eirigh Na Greine. Today tasting impressions of Bunnahabhain 18-year old which, like earlier versions is bottled with natural colour, un-chillfiltered and 46.3% ABV. Presentation deserves a praise. [caption id=attachment_5142 align=alignnone width=801] Bunnahabhain 18 years old[/caption] C: dark amber; N: I find here clear traces of sherry, very fruity, ripe plum, cherries, candied orange, of course it is sweet with vanilla, caramel, delicate traces of sourness, as in almost ripe cherries, then comes prune, plum in chocolate, a touch of figs and dates, I have also elements of smoke and leather furniture; T: pleasant, there are also a lot of fruits, plum, cherry, orange and grapefruit, plum in chocolate, raisins, dates, after a while there is a delicate sparkling on the tongue, bitterness, traces of wood and a bit of salt; F: long, still fruity. Score: 88. Just like Bunnahabhain 12 years old, also 18 years old version is a very good whisky. I am always happy to come back to them. Photo report

Continuing last posts relating to Islay (e.g. A visit to the Ardbeg Distillery) today photos from a visit to the Bunnahabhain Distillery. This is the northernmost distillery on the island, close to Port Askaig and Caol Ila. A narrow and winding lane leads to this place, giving a lot of emotions while driving. Distillery itself is left in a fairly natural form, without any big marketing touch, there is no separate Visitiors Centre either. On the other hand, there is everything you need to...

… from the series of NAS for Travel Retail

After Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine today another single malt from the same distillery, also the NAS for the Travel Retail - Bunnahabhain Darach Ur. What is very positive that producer bottles whisky in natural color, unchillfiltered and higher alcohol content, 46.3% ABV. [caption id=attachment_4041 align=alignnone width=801] Bunnahabhain Darach Ur[/caption] Darach Ur means new oak in Gaelic, that name was given due to the fact that distillate was aged in new barrels made from...

    Next NAS for Travel Retail

A few days ago Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine flew to me from the Frankfurt Airport. One of the recent editions from the distillery, prepared specially for the Travel Retail. Presentation almost very good - natural color, unchillfiltered and 46.3%. It is a pity that this is NAS (no age statement), though I think we have to get used to. [caption id=attachment_4026 align=alignnone width=801] Bunnahabhain Eirigh Na Greine[/caption] Eirigh Na Greine means morning sky in Gaelic. To...

    in Domu Whisky Jastrzebia Gora

On 22-23 August 2014, in the Dom Whisky Jastrzebia Gora the first in Poland whisky festival took place. I arrived there the day before and started the weekend with the presentation, as well as tasting of Glenfiddich Excellence 26 years old. The event was organized in the Dom Whisky, there were Masterclasses at the upper level, in Bar Max, but primarily organizers used the entire space between the buildings, where they placed the individual stands of exhibitors. The weather was good so you...

    46,3% ABV version

Today we have another Islay of Islay representative - Bunnahabhain 12 years old. The distillery was founded in 1881 and is situated on the NE end of the island, even higher than the Caol Ila. It is owned by Burn Steward Distillers (just like Deanston in The Highlands and Tobermory in Islay of Mull). Bunnahabhain Distillery stands out from its region especially that none of its releases is a peatmonster (unlike eg Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg). Bunnahabhain 12 years old is not chill...
